ABOUT KAYLA'S PHOTOGRAPHY
with my art i seek to communicate the feelings that i have while connected to the subject. the process of capturing images fills me with a sense of connectedness to both the grandeur and the fine details; infinity and this very moment. i am filled with a sense that our world is part of a magnificent process and i feel an intimate connection to this complex expansiveness. i see that everything material even works of humans is infused with a spiritual essence - a connection to the splendor. i seek to capture this splendor to share with others.
i begin my work by capturing images. working through the lens,i see the subject from a new perspective. i capture the essence of light with the camera by interpreting the light through the lens. because it is not a human eye, the lens "sees" differently. in exploring the lens' relationship to light i have been freed. the light that is interpreted in the lens as i manipulate it is just as real as the interpretation of the human eye although these images do not look the same. the camera lens and i create a very intimate view that is a whole statement. by stripping away our visual conventions i present the spiritual essence of the the environment, not simply the abandoned tractor, the sand, the flowers, the leaf.
when i return to the studio and view the shots in my "dry darkroom" on my computer i am moved to a few images. they have an emotional quality that matches that essence and recreates the feelings i wish to share. i use my "dry darkroom" as a darkroom and do not further manipulate the image. i am not representing the tractor, the sand, the flowers, the leaf; rather the tractor, the sand, the flowers, the leaf are taking part in creating this visual representation of the intimate view of the grandeur within which we live.
the print is the final step in this process. i never print a successful print more than once. once i am pleased with the result i stop. each print is unique. one of one so to speak. i may print the image another day, but i always return to the RAW file and begin again so that i have all new interpretations as i ready the image to be printed. I have so many images that i love it is not often that i return to an image unless i want to say something else with it. Moving to a wide format printer has created an opportunity to stretch the limits of my approach to abstracting the essence of my subject.
ABOUT KAYLA
kayla was born and raised in Northern California. her teachers complained that she daydreamed; her mother gave her a used brownie camera for her 9th birthday, taught her to use the darkroom and to value her daydreams. after many years away, kayla returned to Berkeley in 2001. in 2003 she was hospitalized with leukemia. while there, her desire to share her awe of life through her photographic art inspired her to work in concert with the chemotherapy to fight the cancer. in 2003 she had her first show and hasn't stopped since.
in June 2006 kayla moved to The Sunset district of San Francisco where she had three shows in the second half of the year. in February 2007 her work was part of the juried exhibition "Abstractions, Color & Texture" at Aurora Colors Gallery (AC) in Petaluma. in March 2007 kayla's art was featured in the juried art show for the "TV of Tomorrow Show" at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. her work was also part of the group show "Green" at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts (F.B.C.A.) in the City of Alameda. in April, also at the F.B.C.A., her work was a sponsor's Best in Show in "Alameda on Camera 2007" and she took part in "Seeing Green" at Santa Cruz Mountain Art Center in Ben Lomand.
in May 2007 kayla presented a solo exhibition "Colors of San Francisco" at the Education Center in the Juvenile Justice Center in San Francisco. her work was part of the juried "May Day, All Things Bright and Beautiful" exhibition at AC Gallery. In June her mixed media found art pieces "3windows" & "2 Cabinets" "was part of "RE:USE" a juried exhibition at Brooks College at Sunnyvale. she also participated with the Sunset Artists in the Hall of Flowers show in Golden Gate Park, and exhibited in "And I Have Loved Thee: Ocean!" at AC Gallery. in July she had several mixed media pieces in the "Altered Barbie" show, exhibited with other local artists at the Sanchez Gallery at the Noe Valley Ministry in San Francisco and was part of "Capturing Light: Photography" at Aurora Colors Gallery.
that summer while working as an intern behind the scenes at the 2007 Altered Barbie show, kayla received a diagnosis for a second, more serious, bone marrow cancer, this time with a poor prognosis. Without a bone marrow transplant she would not survive a year. although kayla curtailed her shows, she completed work altered barbie and presented her work at SF Open Studios in October 2007 while waiting to meet the experts at Stanford. she was lucky to find a match and qualify for a new approach to bone marrow transplants early in 2008.
in the summer of 2008, while recuperating from the BMT she worked again as an intern for the Altered Barbie show, expanding and redesigning the website. throughout the struggle of the transplant kayla never stopped working with her images. because of the effects of the strong medications she temporarily lost many skills. yet she found that she still could work with the computer. kayla began creating much larger images which satisfy her need to focus on form and color, evoking mood and spiritual awareness. that fall she participated in SF Open Studios 2008 presenting a significant body of work in this new format.
in 2009 kayla returned to work. she came home to Berkeley, gained her first anniversary of her BMT and celebrated with new lenses and new captures in Berkeley's Gardens and Gutters Series. on her first camping trip since the loss of her immune system she joined her husband in a sheep pasture for the Centralia old time music campout where the light was magic resulting in a whole new series. she exhibited in numerous shows in Alameda, San Mateo, Berkeley and San Francisco including an exhibit of 8 new works at City Art and her first National Juried Exhibition at ACCI.
